CHSS Coffee House

Central Huron’s Global Village Club hosted a spaghetti dinner and an “Evening in Paris”-themed Karaoke Coffee House on Tuesday, December 6. Although the dinner was not well attended, the Coffee House which followed was very successful. There were live musical acts, a cappella acts and both entertaining and humorous Karaoke acts. All who attended appreciated the courage and talent of the performers and enjoyed tasty treats and coffee as an added bonus. The Club hopes to host another Coffee House in the spring.

DCVI Community Food Drive

St. Marys DCVI’s community food drive this year was a huge success. From December 12 – December 16, grades were pitted against each other to see who would be victorious. When the 100 item mark was reached, one teacher received a pie in the face. On December 14th, over 60 students participated in going out into the community to collect food items. All of the donated items went to the Salvation Army Food bank.

Huron Musicfest

On Thursday November 17th, 2011, over 170 students from South Huron District High School, F.E. Madill Secondary School, G.D.C.I. and Central Huron Secondary School joined together for an afternoon of collaboration as they worked on multiple pieces for a concert that evening at CHSS. The students were split into junior and senior groups conducted by Robert Robilliard and Colin Clarke. It was a great opportunity for students to meet other talented musicians and to prepare for the upcoming Huron Jazz Fest in April. Huron Musicfest is a twenty year tradition, bringing in a critically acclaimed guest clinician to work with the students.

Mo’vember Wrap Up

Early Indicators show Canada in a strong lead, raising over 34 million dollars! – contributing to over 95 million world-wide! Way to go Mo’s!!

Many schools across the Avon Maitland District School Board have been participating in Movember. With all funds going to support Prostate Cancer Canada, this is such a great campaign to get behind and support.

Today is the final day of the campaign, and so far.. here is how things are stacking up:

South Perth CPS

We have been participating in Movember all month, and I have been trying my hardest to grow a moustache that is visible to the naked eye, and finally, by the end, some are reporting being able to see it.

Early in November, we set up a Movember page, and encouraged followers on our class Twitter page to join our team. The Grade 7 students have taken the lead, and collected donations for students on Nov. 25, when we had our Moustache Friday for Movember. We sent flyers home explaining what we were up to and the purpose for the special event, and we had students return $175 in donations. Several staff members also supported our Movember team, and at this point, our donations total $225.

During the Moustache Friday celebrations, Grade 7 students shared the reason for the day, raising awareness for cancer, and to generally promote long, healthy lives for everyone in our community. Each student in our school was given the opportunity to have a moustache applied to their upper lip, as a show of solidarity. Nearly all of our students were outfitted with temporary moustaches, which was great for reinforcing the message, and fostering the sense of community in our building.

We have raised over $3300 and still have money coming in! And the Grade 12 Technological Design class made I HEART MOUSTACHES t-shirts and sold them in the hall to raise money.

Our Movember Auction raised $2,230.00 Tuesday morning. They shaved beards, mustaches, heads and even painted mustaches and other lovely drawings on a few of us females.

Peter’s Mo’tivation: “For the longest time my oldest daughter (now a Doctor) kept after me to get a PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test. When I finally did, it showed a high count. I had attributed my nagging lower back pain to age. Without surgery, I probably wouldn’t be writing this today. So boys, tough up and get the test! It just might save your life.”

Make the Most of it!

Most people, when asked about their favourite memories of high school, don’t mention their course work. Instead, they talk about the field trips, teams, clubs and activities they participated in, and their new friends and “favourite teachers”.

At school it is important for you to do more than just course work. Your secondary school has many exciting clubs, teams and activities for you to become involved in. These are offered before and after school and at lunch time. Join in and catch your school’s spirit.

It’s not just about passing a class, it’s about taking everything you can out of class and doing your very best. -Lindsay

Developing personal relationships is also important. Get to know other students in your school. Talk to your teachers and school staff about who you are and what you want to do with your life. They can help you set academic and personal goals.

Secondary school students lead very busy lives. Many are trying to balance part-time jobs, school work, clubs and/or teams as well as family responsibilities. This can be quite a challenge. Remember, you are not alone! Ask for help from your parents, friends, teachers and school administrators. They are there to help!!
