The Avon Maitland District School Board is committed to ensuring students have the opportunity to graduate secondary school in four years and to ensuring a variety of course offerings for our students. In order to achieve both goals efficiently students need to be registered full time in each semester.

South Huron has an outstanding history of excellence in a variety of areas and we take great pride in celebrating our achievements. Since the school opened in 1950, our students have demonstrated excellence in academic achievement, in the arts, and in athletics. We proudly display the trophies, plaques, and photographs that attest to this success in the display cabinets and on the walls throughout the school. Student success is what we are about. We strive to provide programs to meet the needs of all students as they work toward their post-secondary destinations. Whether the destination is the world of work, an apprenticeship, college, or university, we have something for everyone. In addition to the core academics, we offer a full range of arts courses, a variety of technological studies courses, modern languages, business studies, cooperative education, and physical education. Our Special Education Department also provides a broad range of services for students who require additional support.

South Huron District High School is proud to be a part of Exeter and all of the surrounding communities. We encourage our students to develop a greater awareness of the importance of involvement and citizenship through participation in and support of community events and organizations. Special Education at SHDHS

Students who have been identified through the IPRC process (Individual Placement and Review Committee) will take courses that have been modified to suit their specific individual needs and/or receive learning accommodations. These recommendations are outlined in the minutes of the IPRC meetings and in their I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan). Resource teachers and educational assistants provide programs and assistance for identified students. Our resource staff works hard to meet the needs of students by means of enrichment, withdrawal and special programming. Contact the Special Education department for more details.

COPE

The COPE program is an alternative education program for students who have struggled to be successful in the regular school program. COPE offers students the opportunity to earn credits in two ways: through “correspondence style” courses for a range of academic credits, and through the completion of Co-op credits. Students will attend school and will work on the correspondence style courses with the assistance of a classroom teacher. COPE students will generally work on one or two academic credits at a time. All candidates for COPE must be selected by school administration.

Cooperative Education and OYAP

Co-operative Education prepares students for successful participation in a work placement. The course is a planned learning experience for which credits are earned. The program combines classroom theory and workplace learning experiences to enable students to apply and refine knowledge and skills acquired in a related curriculum course. Students who complete coop placement hours in an apprenticeable field are considered Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) participants.

English as a Second Language/Student

Exchange Program

The Avon Maitland District School Board recognizes that secondary ESL students face unique challenges as they pursue their secondary diploma and make the transition to full fluency in English. Students in the early stages of English acquisition may monitor courses or work for partial credits if they are not able to meet the curriculum expectations for a course. Adapted programming helps students achieve credits in courses even if their communication skills are not sufficiently developed to demonstrate their learning. ESL students may also be provided with tutoring to enable them to expand their language skills more rapidly. While students may need more than 4 years to complete their diploma, Avon Maitland DSB students who take ESL are given the assistance they need to fulfill their long-term goals.

Course Changes

Students wishing to change a course should fill out the proper paperwork and submit it to Guidance. Course changes can occur at different times in the year for a variety of reasons. The normal practice is to cease making course changes two weeks into a semester. Parental approval is required for changes if students are less than 18 years old. Course changes are not always possible after the start of the school year, and should be made as early as possible to facilitate success.

Guidance & Career Education

The Guidance and Career Education Program at SHDHS provides the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for students to know and appreciate themselves, to relate effectively to others, to develop appropriate educational plans and to explore career alternatives. These objectives are met through individual interviews and classroom instruction. Student Services is your liaison with community resources, post-secondary educational institutions, the world of work and with the home.

Experiential Learning

Schools are offering more opportunities to customize your high school experience and build on your strengths and interests through a variety of new and enhanced learning options including Experiential Learning. Experiential Learning programs such as Co-op, Dual Credits, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) enhance your academic background and provide you with opportunities to gain valuable experiences in our community.

No matter what your post-secondary pathway may be, experiential learning can assist you in making career decisions and help you develop the knowledge, skills and habits required in the workplace. All forms of experiential learning are a valuable complement to your post-secondary preparation and future employment.

Dual Credit Offerings at Conestoga, Fanshawe and Lambton Colleges

What is a Dual Credit Program

Dual credit programs allow senior high school students the opportunity to earn high school and college credits at the same time. Students typically attend Conestoga, Fanshawe or Lambton College’s campuses once a week for a fifteen week period. This unique arrangement allows you, the student, the chance to experience life and learning in a college environment and allows you to fast track towards your post-secondary goals.

Program availability is subject to change. A maximum of 4 college-delivered dual credits can be counted as optional credits towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Dual Credits cannot be used as substitutions for compulsory credit requirements.

What does it cost?

You pay nothing. All books, transportation and tuition are paid for through grants from the School College Work Initiative (SCWI). SCWI is a collaborative partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

What makes a student eligible?

Dual credit programs are intended to assist secondary school students in the completion of their OSSD and provide a successful transition to college and apprenticeship programs. As well, students in Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs (OYAP) are eligible to enroll. Enrolment in half or full day Co-op allows greater flexibility to participate.

How do I apply?

You MUST be referred to the program through your School Student Success Team. Avon Maitland College partners will not accept applications directly.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

  • Are you a hands on learner?
  • Do you like to solve problems?
  • Are you good at fixing things?
  • Do you find it difficult to sit in a classroom all day?

If you answered yes to any of the above, the apprenticeship pathway may be for you!

Get started on your apprenticeship while in high school. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) allows you to be considered an OYAP Participant and earn cooperative education credits for work experience in an apprenticeable trade. You may or may not be formally registered as an apprentice while attending secondary school. To participate in OYAP you must: be at least 16 years of age, have completed a minimum of 16 credits, be a full-time student working towards completion of your diploma and complete OYAP participant form.

A student who participates in OYAP must have a Personalized Placement Learning Plan (PPLP) that is based on the on-the-job training requirements outlined in the government approved training standard for that trade. Training Standard competency booklets can be found at your local Ministry of Training, College and Universities (MTCU) office.

Specialist High Skills Majors

The SHSM is a specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and assist in their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace. SHSM allow students to focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests. Visit www.successforlife.ca to view the SHSM sectors available at this school.

Every SHSM must include the following five components:

  1. A bundle of 8-10 Grade 11 and 12 courses in the selected field that includes 2 cooperative education credits
  2. Sector-recognized certifications and/or training courses
  3. Experiential learning activities within the sector
  4. Reach Ahead experiences connected with the student’s chosen post-secondary pathway
  5. Development of key Essential Skills and Work Habits required for the sector; and the use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) for purposes of documentation

Avon Maitland District E-Learning Centre (AMDEC)

AMDEC is a fully online secondary school within the Avon Maitland DSB, which offers courses from grade 9 to grade 12 in most subject areas. Our courses are taught by experienced AMDSB teachers who are committed to student success through a quality eLearning experience. Your success as a student is also supported by our principal, vice principal, program coordinator, guidance counsellor, technical help department, office staff and the home school. Our goal at AMDEC is to provide you with the best possible eLearning experience. We believe that our program provides an excellent educational opportunity for all of our students.

AMDEC delivers a non-semestered, modified continuous intake program. With the permission of your home school, you may start AMDEC courses any time between September and mid-February, but all students must finish their courses by early June. You have flexible deadlines for your assignments; however, you are responsible for establishing an assignment completion schedule that meets both AMDEC’s due dates and your own needs (for example, completing the course by the end of first semester or meeting post-secondary mark submission deadlines). You are encouraged to complete courses prior to the final due date. Module completion requirements and a list of important due dates are posted in the Student Handbook and are also available on our website: www.amdec.ca.

Students wishing to take an AMDEC course must register through the guidance department of their home school. You may consider eLearning courses for a number of reasons: to take a course that is not offered at your home school; to solve a timetable conflict; and to experience eLearning before starting post-secondary education. To succeed in eLearning, you need to have: self-motivation, organization, self-direction, time management, computer proficiency, and honesty.

The Arts

ADA2O, Drama, Grade 10, Open

This course provided opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions, and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama through creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences.

ADA3O, Drama, Grade 11, Open

This course requires students to engage in dramatic processes and the presentation of dramatic works, and emphasizes the application of drama skills in other contexts and opportunities. Students will interpret and present works in a variety of dramatic forms, create and script original works, and critically analyse the processes involved in producing drama works. Students will develop a variety of skills related to collaboration and the presentation of drama works.

ADA3M, Drama, Grade 11, University/College Preparation

This course requires students to create and perform in dramatic presentations. Students will analyze, interpret, and perform dramatic works from various cultures and time periods. Students will research various acting styles and conventions that could be used in their presentations, and analyze the functions of playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians, and audiences.

Prerequisite: Grade 9 or 10 Drama, Open

ADA4E, Drama, Grade 12, Workplace Preparation

This course requires students to create, present, and analyse a variety of dramatic works relevant to the workplace. Students will build trust and collaborative skills and develop self-confidence through hands-on experience and project-based learning in drama activities. Students will also explore skills related to the study of drama that can be applied in the workplace.

Prerequisite: Drama, Grade 11, Open

ADA4M, Drama, Grade 12, University/College Preparation

This course requires students to experiment individually and collaboratively with forms and conventions of both drama and theatre from various cultures and time periods. Students will interpret dramatic literature and other text and media sources while learning about various theories of directing and acting. Students will examine the significance of dramatic arts in various cultures, and will analyze how the knowledge and skills developed in drama are related to their personal skills, social awareness and goals beyond secondary school.

ALC1O, Integrated Arts, Grade 9, Open

This course integrates two or more of the arts (dance, drama, media arts, music, and visual arts), giving students the opportunity to produce and present integrated art works created individually or collaboratively. Students will demonstrate innovation as they learn and apply concepts, styles, and conventions unique to the various arts and acquire skills that are transferable beyond the classroom. Students will use the creative process and responsible practices to explore solutions to integrated arts challenges. Students will rotate through units in Visual Arts, Dramatic Arts, Instrumental Music and Guitar/Technology in the Arts.

AMG3O, Guitar Music, Grade 11, Open

This course develops students' artistic knowledge and skills through the performance of music and the preparation of music productions. Students will perform appropriate works, particularly works in contemporary popular styles. Independently and in groups, they will also plan, market, and produce music productions, making use of appropriate technology, and will evaluate the results. This course focuses exclusively on guitar music.

AMU2O, Music, Grade 10, Open

This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using a creative and critical analysis processes in composition performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the functions of music in society with reference to the self, communities, cultures.

AMU3M, Music, Grade 11, University/College Preparation

This course provides students with opportunities to develop their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music, including traditional, commercial, and art music. Students will apply the creation process when performing appropriate technical exercises and repertoire and will employ you're the critical analysis processes when reflecting on, responding to and analyzing live and recorded performances. This will consider the function of music in society and the impact of music on individuals and communities. They will explore how to apply skills developed in music to their lives and careers.

Prerequisite: Grade 9 or 10 Music, Open

AMU3O, Music, Grade 11, Open

This course develops students' musical literacy through performance and the preparation and presentation of music productions. Students will perform works at a level consistent with previous experience. Independently and collaboratively, students will use current technology and the creative and critical analysis processes to plan, produce, present, and market musical productions. Students will respond to, reflect on, and analyse music from various genres and periods, and they will develop skills transferable to other aspects of their life and their careers. No prior experience in music is necessary, and performance aspects are not emphasized.

Prerequisite: None. Please note: This is NOT an instrumental course.

AMU4M, Music, Grade 12, University/College Preparation

This course enables students to enhance their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music. Students will perform traditional, commercial, and art music, and will respond with insight through live and recorded performances. Students will enhance their understanding of the function of music in society and the impact of music on themselves and various communities and cultures. Students will analyze how to apply skills developed in music to their lives and careers.

Prerequisite: Grade 11 Music, University/College Preparation or Open

AVI2O, Visual Arts, Grade 10, Open

This course emphasizes students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by introducing them to new ideas, materials, processes for artistic exploration and experimentation. Students will apply elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal contemporary and historical context.

AVI3O, Visual Arts, Grade 11, Open

This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, collage, and/or multimedia art. Students will use the creative process to create art works that reflect a wide range of subjects and will evaluate works using the critical analysis process. Students will also explore works of art within a personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural context.

AVI3M, Visual Arts, Grade 11, University/College Preparation

This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through studio work that may include drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking, as well as the creation of collage, multimedia works, and works using emergent technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process when evaluating their own work and the work of others. The course may be delivered as a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g. Photography, video, computer graphics, information design)

AVI4E, Visual Arts, Grade 12, Workplace Preparation

This course focuses on a practical approach to a variety of art and design projects related to the workplace. Students will use the creative process to produce a traditional and/or digital portfolio of their work in a variety of media. Students may focus on various aspects of visual arts, including advertising, ceramics, fashion design, graphic arts, jewellery design, and/or web design.

AVI4M, Visual Arts, Grade 12, University/College Preparation

This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process to deconstruct art works and explore connections between art and society. The studio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied in their own art production. Students will also make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts.

Business

BTT1O, Information and Communication Technology in Business, Grade 9, Open

This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, database, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology.

BTT2O, Information and Communication Technology In Business, Grade 10, Open

This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology.

BDI3C, Entrepreneurship: The Venture, Grade 11, College Preparation

This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. Students will create a venture plan for a student-run school-based or summer business. Through hands-on experiences, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs. Offered in 2017-18 school year. Not offered in 2018-19.

BAF3M, Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11, University/College Preparation

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized business, financial analysis and current issues and ethics in accounting.

ICS2O, Introduction to Computer Studies, Grade 10, Open

This course introduces students to computer programming. Students will plan and write simple computer programs by applying fundamental programming concepts, and learn to create clear and maintainable internal documentation. They will also learn to manage a computer by studying hardware configurations, software selection, operating system functions, networking, and safe computing practices. Students will also investigate the social impact of computer technologies, and develop an understanding of environmental and ethical issues related to the use of computers.

ICS3U, Introduction to Computer Science, Grade 11, University Preparation

This course introduces students to computer science through the creation of Android tablet and phone apps. Students will design software independently and as part of a team, using industry-standard programming tools and applying the software development life-cycle model. They will also write and use subprograms within computer programs. Students will develop creative apps for various types of problems as their understanding of the computing environment grows. They will also explore environmental and ergonomic issues, emerging research in computer science, and global career trends in computer-related fields.

ICS3C, Introduction to Computer Programming, Grade 11, College Preparation

This course introduces students to computer programming concepts and practices. Students will write and test computer programs, using various problem-solving strategies. They will learn the fundamentals of program design and apply a software development life-cycle model to a software development project. Students will also learn about computer environments and systems, and explore environmental issues related to computers, safe computing practices, emerging technologies, and post-secondary opportunities in computer-related fields.

ICS4C, Computer Programming, Grade 12, College Preparation

This course further develops students' computer programming skills. Students will learn object oriented programming concepts, create object oriented software solutions, and design graphical user interfaces. Student teams will plan and carry out a software development project using industry-standard programming tools and proper project management techniques. Students will also investigate ethical issues in computing, and expand their understanding of environmental issues, emerging technologies, and computer related careers.

ICS4U, Computer Science, Grade 12, University Preparation

This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills in computer science. Students will use modular design principles to create complex and fully documented programs, according to industry standards. Student teams will manage a large software development project, from planning through to project review. Students will also analyse algorithms for effectiveness. They will investigate ethical issues in computing and further explore environmental issues, emerging technologies, areas of research in computer science, and careers in the field.

BMI3C, Marketing: Goods, Services, Events, Grade 11, College Preparation

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of product marketing, which includes the marketing of goods, services and events. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer-buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice. Not offered in 2017-18. Will be offered in 2018-19

Canadian & World Studies

CGC1D, Issues in Canadian Geography, Grade 9, Academic

This course examines interrelationships within and between Canada's natural and human systems and how these systems interconnect with those in other parts of the world. Students will explore environmental, economic, and social geographic issues relating to topics such as transportation options, energy choices, and urban development. Students will apply the concepts of geographic thinking and the geographic inquiry process, including spatial technologies, to investigate various geographic issues and to develop possible approaches for making Canada a more sustainable place to live.

CGC1P, Issues in Canadian Geography, Grade 9, Applied

This course focuses on current geographic issues that affect Canadians. Students will draw on their personal and everyday experiences as they explore a range of issues, including food and water supplies, competing land uses, and interactions with the natural environment, developing their awareness that issues that affect their lives are interconnected with issues in other parts of the world. Students will apply the concepts of geographic thinking and the geographic inquiry process, including spatial technologies, to investigate choices related to sustainable living in Canada.

CHC2D, Canadian History Since World War I, Grade 10, Academic

This course explores social, economic, and political developments and events and their impact on the lives of different groups in Canada since 1914. Students will examine the role of conflict and cooperation in Canadian society, Canada's evolving role within the global community, and the impact of various individuals, organizations, and events on Canadian identity, citizenship, and heritage. They will develop their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, when investigating key issues and events in Canadian history since 1914.

CHC2L, Canadian History Since World War I, Grade 10, Locally Developed

This course focuses on the connections between the student and key people, events, and themes in Canadian history from World War I to the present. Students prepare for the Grades 11 and 12 Workplace Preparation history courses through the development and extension of historical and inquiry skills. Students explore a variety of topics highlighting individuals and events that have contributed to the story of Canada. The major themes of Canadian identity, internal and external relationships, and changes since 1914, are explored through guided investigation. Cooperative Education

COP4X2, (2 credit), Cooperative Education, Grades 11 and 12, Open

This cooperative education course includes a classroom component where students will create effective resumes and cover letters, complete job applications, demonstrate the ability to respond appropriately to questions posed by an employer during an interview session, gain an understanding of safety in the workplace and employees' and employers' rights and responsibilities, as well as develop an understanding of issues related to confidentiality, labour unions, the Employment Standards Act and the Human Rights Act. The placement component of the course provides the opportunity for the student to apply and further develop the knowledge and skills acquired in the related course while participating as an employee in a workplace setting. Throughout the term, students will return to the classroom for sessions, which are designed to provide them with the opportunity to reflect on and analyze their placement experience as well as research career information, labour market trends and the nature of the workplace in the future including the changing role of men and women at work. OYAP is also a possibility for these students.

A 4-credit Coop option may be possible and is strongly recommended for students considering placements in the Construction, Industrial and Motive Power Trades. This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing.

This hands-on, project-based course is designed for students planning to enter an occupation or apprenticeship in manufacturing directly after graduation. Students will work on a variety of manufacturing projects, developing knowledge and skills in design, fabrication, and problem solving and using tools and equipment such as engine lathes, milling machines, and welding machines. In addition, students may have the opportunity to acquire industry-standard certification and training. The course is appropriate for all students as a general interest course to prepare them for future vehicle operation, care, and maintenance or for entry into an apprenticeship in the motive power trades. Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to transportation, and will learn about careers in the transportation industry and the skills and training required for them.

Apprenticeship Pathway

Nathan Bjelis

NAthan Bjelis, standing in front of machinery

Nathan grew up on a farm just outside of Exeter with his two younger sisters and parents. He attended Usborne Central Public School until it joined with South Huron District Elementary School in grade 7. He was a part of the first group ever to graduate grade 8 from South Huron’s elementary wing. While attending South Huron, Nathan has been the top male academic student each year. He has also held down part time jobs at Dykstra Trucking, Emmanuel Baptist Church summer camps, and Hi-Tech Industrial Machine. Nathan has been a member of the SHDHS curling team since grade nine and hopes to finish strong this year. Nathan has become very involved in the tech programs at South Huron, developing skills to accompany his hobby of designing and building. Nathan was able to build a CNC gantry mill during manufacturing class and the odd lunch break. He has used it to create a hobby business of creating custom clocks and engravings.

In his senior year, Nathan is taking courses focused on his passion for technologies and tool and die including a two credit co-op at Hi-Tech Industrial Machine through Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Nathan will graduate with his red seal diploma as a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Transportation Technology. Recently, Nathan has been touring locations to begin an apprenticeship in Tool and Die. He is very interested in the world of prototyping and seeing ideas come to life. He thinks that down the road he will get training in computer assisted drawing for programs such as Solidworks. This way he can pursue his passion of designing what the customer wants and then going out and building it. Nathan has already started thinking about starting his own shop after he has completed his apprenticeship. He is very appreciative of the experiences he has had at SHDHS so that he can continue to develop his abilities and pursue his passion.

College Pathway

Tyler Merner

Tyler was born and raised in Zurich, Ontario, and attended Zurich Public school until his grade 7 year. Then he then switched to St. Boniface school for the remainder of his grade 8 year due to the closure of ZPS. He took part in a number of school activities and extracurriculars including hockey, baseball, soccer, track, cross country, basketball, volleyball and … pretty much every sport. He now specializes in Obstacle Course Racing and has competed two years in a row for Team Canada at the OCR World championship, cracking the top 10 both times. He has been involved in Athletic Council all 4 years of high school and is the president of the Council this year.

Ty planned ahead and designed his career path sooner than most students. He hopes to pursue a diploma in Business - Marketing in college and would then like to get his Real Estate licence. He has worked hard in all of his courses and has made sure to get all of his Math and English credits completed to ensure he is ready for his college program. Because he has worked at Source For Sports his entire high school career and played many sports in and out of school, he admits "I guess you can say I learned a few things about time management." He set high goals for himself and did all he could to accomplish them. One motto he lives by is "In order to succeed, you need to fail." He feels that if you never fail, you don’t learn anything. Only if you give up does he consider it a true failure. He’d like to thank all the great teaching staff that helped him develop the skills he will be using when he takes on the real world, and appreciates the friendships he has made throughout his four years at South Huron.

University Pathway

Vanessa Trocchi

Vanessa Trocchi, standing in front of a tree outside the school smiling

After attending Hensall Public School for 9 years, Vanessa graduated with the first grade eight class of the South Huron 7/8 Campus. During her high school years at South Huron she has played basketball and volleyball for all four years, coached midget volleyball in grade eleven and has become a member of Student Council for her final year. These extracurriculars have all helped her to develop a leadership role within the school. Outside of school, she was a competitive dancer in grades nine and ten. Then she received a job as a hostess in a restaurant which she still holds today.

Throughout high school, Vanessa came to the conclusion that her interests lie within Math and Science. As a result, her current plan is to attend Western University, Wilfrid Laurier University or University of Waterloo for Health Sciences/ Health Promotion. Eventually, she hopes to pursue a career in Public Health or Health Administration. The best advice Vanessa can give to incoming students is to get involved in what interests them.
