OYAP Explained

OYAPThe Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is an option for all secondary school students, including exceptional students, who are working towards an OSSD. OYAP allows students to enter an apprenticeship while enrolled in secondary school under an agreement between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities. It is an extension of the cooperative education program, providing workplace training that allows students to register as apprentices in over 200 Ontario trades. Students benefit by earning credits toward their OSSD and apprenticeship competencies toward Trade Certification at the same time.

What is an OYAP Student?

An OYAP student is a student who is earning COOP credits for work experience in an apprenticeship occupation. The student may or may not be registered as an apprentice while still in high school.

Who can participate in OYAP?

Student must:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • complete sixteen credits towards the OSSD prior to starting the program
  • be enrolled as full-time students during the program
  • complete all compulsory credits required for the OSSD

Apprenticeship Registration Procedures

apprenticeshipThe Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, in partnership with provincial school boards, is transitioning to a new data collection system that will include all student participants in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) as well as those students who may be registered as Apprentices during their co-op placement. The impact of this change is outlined below.

PART 1: Participant Registration Form (.pdf)

Complete electronically for every student in your co-op class who is placed at a placement in an Apprenticeable Trade. Print out the registration form and then send home for a parent/guardian signature and then forward to the OYAP office. Scan or fax the document to the Coop Head at your home school. Keep a copy for your own records in a safe place.

After you have secured the support of the employer/sponsor to actually register the student as an apprentice…

PART 2: Request for Registration Form (.pdf)

Complete electronically for students who would like to be considered for registration as an Apprentice. Obtain the parent/guardian’s signature and forward to the OYAP office. Once again, the document can first be sent scanned or as a fax to the Coop Head at the home school. Keep a copy for your own records in a safe place.
